Retrosaria (Portuguese for haberdashery) is a Portugese knitting shop and yarn business committed to developing minimally processed yarns from the wool of native Portuguese sheep breeds. The online shop was started by Rosa Pomar in January 2008 and at the end of 2009 a bricks and mortar shop was opened in the heart of Lisbon.
Rosa spends her time between the shop, where she teaches many of the classes offered there, and researching Portuguese textiles. Retrosaria carries a wide range of yarns some of which are handspun by skilled artisans using traditional tools and methods.
Rosa and her team are committed to supporting their local artisans. For instance just recently they developed an enamel pin which celebrates the Serra da Estrela shepherds and their tradition of decorating the horns of their sheep and goats with colorful pompoms on special days. The money raised from the sale of these pins will go to ANCOSE (the Serra da Estrela Sheep Breeders Association) to support them following the effects of the devastating fires in Portugal.
Mondim is a non super-wash 100% Portuguese sock weight yarn. The yarn is named after the Portueguese village once famous for its sock knitting cottage industry. Mondim comes in a variety of vibrant solid, as well as variegated colours.
