The Little Grey Sheep - Hampshire DK
The Little Grey Sheep at Well Manor is a small family farm on the Surrey Hampshire borders, committed to conserving their landscape and farm as traditionally as possible. Their sheep are an integral part of that plan, through managed grazing and reversion of agricultural land to traditional pastures.
The flock is managed and sheared by Susie, an award winning shepherdess and shearer, who started her own flock at the age of 10! The fleeces are hand sorted on the farm by Emma and Susie and the yarns are also dyed on the farm by Emma , in gorgeous colours inspired by the beautiful countryside.
The Hampshire DK is a relatively new woolen spun yarn from The Little Grey Sheep and has its own wonderful story. Following shearing and sorting for their own fleeces, Emma and Susie had a batch of fibre which did not meet the minimum 75mm length required for worsted spinning. But they could not see this luxurious, lustrous fine wool go to waste and hatched a plan. Susie spends the summer months shearing other small flocks of traditional British breed sheep, who sadly were not producing enough fleece to warrant it being spun on its own. Emma and Susie decided to work with these farmers and combine their fibre, together with their own Gotland and Fine Stein fibre, to create a gorgeous British blend, traditionally woollen spun and produced in Yorkshire.
The Hampshire DK is a gorgeous lofty yarn, with good stitch definition. Once blocked the fabric blooms and has a silky quality which improves with wear. Hampshire DK would be perfect for a snuggly cardigan or cozy hat and would make a stunning colour work project. The colourways have a gorgeous depth of colour, which is not over saturated but allows the subtleties of the variegated base to show through.
